How does this work?

Put simply, Counselling and Psychotherapy are ‘talking therapies’. No-one knows you like you do, which means the only ‘expert’ there can be on you, is you.

By sharing and discussing your concerns, your experiences and your current situation with a qualified, non-judgmental and confidential therapist you can ultimately discover your own unique way forward in a way that is right for you in order to regain a sense of ownership and belonging in your life.

How long do sessions last?


Sessions last for 50 minutes and are usually provided once per week at a regular appointment time. I provide both short-term and long-term support (this means anywhere from 6 weeks to several years).

Are sessions confidential?


Your sessions are entirely professionally confidential and I am bound by the Codes of Ethics and Standards of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the law. A copy of the code of practice and ethics can be viewed on the BACP's web site. More information about session confidentiality will be provided before you begin your sessions.
 

What will I have to do?

One of the most common questions I am asked is "Will you give me 'homework'?" to which the short answer is 'No'. However, it is often beneficial to have moments in your week, in between sessions, where you consider how you felt in your previous session and anything you might like to bring to your next session. This can help you maintain focus on your goals and prevent your sessions from ‘wandering’ in a way that might be unhelpful for you. Of course, if you feel that writing things down may help you, there is no problem in you doing so; the most important thing is that you understand you are in control of your sessions.

 

You won't be ‘labelled’, given a ‘diagnosis’ reduced to ‘a collection of chemicals’ or 'symptoms'. You won’t be ‘medicalised’ and you won't be told to ‘change your diet’ or ‘get some exercise’. Instead, you will be treated as the individual that you are in order to find your way forward, based upon proven, psychological approaches.


Throughout your sessions, you will be respected, heard and supported. At times, I may gently challenge you, I may ask you to explore other possibilities or invite you to explore some of the things you have raised in more detail. However, this will always be without shaming or judgement, with respect, understanding and compassion.

Session Reviews


Throughout your time with me, we will agree times for reviews of the sessions and discuss any particular ways in which you might like to move forward. Again, this can help maintain focus on your goals to ensure that you continue to move forward in a way that is right for you.
